Everything you need to know about yarn interlacing

What is yarn interlacing and why it is a crucial process for the textile industry

Interlacing of yarns is a fundamental type of processing within the textile industry. This type of process is in fact used to create yarns, even elastic, by covering a core of natural or synthetic elastomer with one or more strands of the desired fibers.
It is a fast, precise and accurate process, which allows to make elastic threads, and not only, of almost any thickness and material. Also in different colors and with various patterns.

The textile sector has always been at the forefront of technology. In order to keep up with the times, and allow the production of yarns and fabrics more innovative, efficient, and high-performing, they are often developed in the industrial field cutting-edge technologies. This allows to create threads and yarns able to adapt to any industry need.

What is interlacing in textile

Interlacing technique allows to create elastic threads, with any fiber and in different titles. A necessity increasingly demanded by the market, so yarns and fabrics must have excellent elastic properties to adapt to various needs.

The principle is quite simple: one of the threads acts as a central core, while a second thread (or in some cases more than one) covers it, wrapping it tightly. This process also allows the creation of elastic yarns. For this reason, the core is often in a natural elastic material (elastomer) – such as latex – or synthetic, such as spandex. They are generally covered with:

  • cotton;
  • viscose;
  • polypropylene;
  • polyamide;
  • polyester.

How does an interlacing machine work?

The machine keeps the core at constant tension. Then, it proceeds to wrap the second half filament around the elastic thread, creating a tight spiral. It is possible to customize the stiffness or softness of the wire by simply changing the tension applied to the elastomer core, or by changing the direction or winding tension. In this way you can also create special pattern effects, as in the case of relief work.

Interlacing machines are therefore used to produce wires of various grades, such as:

  • stretch threads for jeans, usually quite thick;
  • balanced and well-balanced threads for straight knitting;
  • very fine yarns can also be worked for the weaving of tights;
  • high-grade elastic threads, very resistant, ideal for creating technical fabrics.

Why is the interlacing of yarns so important?

We must remember that this process can be applied both to wires already subjected to a first twisting, but also to those which have already been worked – and then subject them to a twisting.
One of the great advantages of the interlacing of yarns is the possibility of customization. Allows you to make elastic yarns even with more than two garments, so as to create threads in colors totally customizable according to the needs of the customer.
The imagination is really at the power with this technique: as we have seen, it is easy to vary also the thickness and number of turns of the covering of the soul, and even its texture. With the yarn interlacing especially if carried out with state-of-the-art and high quality machines, it is possible to design and create elastic threads of any type, for every kind of application.

And the benefits do not end here:

  • interlacing eliminates that annoying and unsightly translucent and glossy appearance typical of elastomers (latex and elastane);
  • Elastomers are often sensitive to light and heat. Covering them with other textile fibres (such as cotton, polyamide, or others) helps improve the strength of the elastomer core, making it less sensitive to factors that could weaken it;
  • versatility: the spiral mills can be programmed to produce threads with different degrees of elasticity. This makes it possible to make threads for a wide range of uses: sportswear, technical uniforms, work clothing, tights and underwear, even elastic medical gauze and much more.
